Victim Centered Prosecution of Sex Crimes.
It is no exaggeration to say that we fail at sexual assault prosecutions more than just about any other crime.  According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, only 5 out of every 1000 sexual assault perpetrators will end up in prison despite sexual assault carrying some of the strongest penalties we can provide.  Out of every 1000 sexual assaults, only 230 will even be reported to police.  46 of those will lead to arrest and 9 will be referred to prosecutors.  The District Attorney’s Office will lead the effort to educate the public on these crimes and create an environment where survivors are supported, believed, protected from retaliation and receive their day in court.  Sexual Assault type crimes will be the top-priority for the District Attorney’s Office, including acknowledging and addressing the often unseen and reported crimes against marginalized populations such as transgender, disadvantaged youth, and Native Americans.

Seize Guns from Domestic Violence Perpetrators.
Colorado and Federal law require that anyone convicted of domestic violence surrender their weapons and never possess them again.  This is done at the point of conviction and sometimes checked during probation.  However, we need to make prosecuting those with domestic violence convictions who are later caught with weapons a priority, lead proactive measures to find and remove guns from those so convicted, and partner with federal prosecuting agencies to ensure the stiffest penalties.  Guns combined with domestic violence leads to lethal consequences.

Critical Repeat Offender Task Force – Focus Prosecution on Hardened Criminals and Violent Crime.
A shocking percentage of crimes are committed by a very small number of professional, repeat offenders.  I will create a task force whose sole purpose is the targeting and successful prosecution of these serial offenders with the goal of ensuring lengthy sentences for this small criminal subset.  By focusing on these critical offenders, the vast majority of other offenders can receive the treatment and help they need to rehabilitate their lives and never offend again.  The CROTF will utilize the latest in technological advancements to identify, track, and detain these high profile offenders.
